Berlin on My Lover’s Lips

The full title of the piece is Berlin on My Lover’s Lips: Perform Your Heritage for Me (Seven days. Seven neighborhoods in Berlin. Seven currywursts.). It was conceived as a performance documentation project wherein my partner, who was born in Germany, consumed this iconic delicacy from seven different currywurst shacks in seven different neighborhoods on seven different days. For the online exhibition Enact: Art in the Mind, curators Ann Torke and Nanette Yanuzzi asked participants to respond to a 1970 publication (Art in the Mind) that contained 65 conceptual art projects (as proposals, diagrams, musings, drawings, etc.) Since my own practice involves a lot of grid works, I was inspired by Mel Bochner’s Number Drawings (rows and columns of hand-drawn numbers that create grid patterns).

In the resulting photograph, each individual picture (one from each curry shack) was assigned a number from one to seven, and the images were combined as follows: Row one = images 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7; Row 2 = images 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 1; Row 3 = images 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 1, 2; Row 4 = images 4, 5, 6, 7, 1, 2, 3, etc. Note that the same pattern is used for the columns: Column 1 = images 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7; Column 2 = images 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 1, etc.
